Developmental Disorders Q & A

What are developmental disorders?

Developmental disorders are conditions that cause language, physical, learning, emotional, or behavioral impairments that negatively affect children’s growth or development. Kids with developmental disorders might not fit in or perform as well as peers of the same age. Treatment can help them thrive as much as possible in their environment.

What are examples of developmental disorders?

Common developmental disorders children sometimes experience include:

  • Anxiety
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Attention-deficit disorder (ADD)
  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Depression
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Vision or hearing impairments
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Physical disabilities
  • Speech impairment
  • Tourette syndrome

There aren’t cures for many developmental problems, but treatment can reduce undesirable symptoms and lessen the gap between children with developmental delays and their peers.

What are the signs of developmental disorders?

Signs your child could have a developmental disorder include:

  • Missed developmental milestones
  • Problems learning in school
  • Poor muscle tone or development
  • Poor coordination
  • Impaired social skills
  • Problems getting along with other people
  • Acting inappropriately
  • Difficulty paying attention or sitting still
  • Ticks or unusual body movements
  • Mood swings or angry outbursts
  • Ongoing sadness, fear, nervousness, or anxiety

If your child isn’t progressing like their peers of the same age in growth and development, see Dr. Alston at Be Balanced Naturopathic Care Center for an evaluation.

How does my provider diagnose developmental disorders?

To determine if your child has a developmental problem, Dr. Alston evaluates their lifestyle, medical history, behavior and learning patterns, symptoms, growth, and physical and cognitive development.

She asks you and your child questions, conducts developmental assessments, may do learning activities with your child, and completes a physical exam.

She might recommend your child undergo diagnostic tests like blood tests, urine tests, or imaging procedures to detect or rule out underlying medical problems. Specialty lab testing gives Dr. Alston more information about the body’s biochemical processes.

What are the treatments for developmental disorders?

Common treatments Dr. Alston may recommend for your child, depending on the type and severity of disorder they have, include:

  • Personalized clinical nutrition
  • Exercise changes
  • Dietary supplements
  • Botanical medicine
  • Physical therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Social therapy
  • Behavioral counseling
  • Special education assistance
  • Applied behavioral analysis (ABA) therapy

As a practitioner with extensive training in the principles of ABA therapy and certification in positive behavior support, Dr. Alston is comfortable and experienced working with special needs children.

Dr. Alston can also help you make arrangements for your child at school if they require tutoring, extra assistance during class, or other types of aid. She personalizes your child’s treatment to give them the best chance to thrive.
